Lizzo’s Reminder to Commit to 1 Intentional Act of Antiracism a Day Is an Important One

By | April 16, 2021

Lizzo is here to remind allies that antiracism is a lifelong commitment, and daily action matters in helping to dismantle structural racism and even saving lives. “Racism isn’t a black-and-white photo or antiquated idea, it’s a system that is very well alive today and works really well in this country,” the singer said in an Instagram video on Thursday.

“Maybe it won’t make the biggest change in the world, but one change in your life can change your mind and maybe save someone’s life.”

Lizzo also explained that “putting ‘BLM’ in your bio and posting a black square is no longer the bare minimum.” “You have to do an intentional act of anti-racism every single day,” she said. She went on to give examples of what intentional actions look like, including donating to bail out a protester, buying from a POC-owned business, or standing up for someone getting harassed for the color of their skin. Whether you choose to read a book about the history of racial inequality in America or order takeout from a Black-owned restaurant, make daily habits out of your antiracist actions to contribute towards positive change.

“This is the new bare minimum, everybody,” Lizzo continued in her video. “Maybe it won’t make the biggest change in the world, but one change in your life can change your mind and maybe save someone’s life.” Watch the clip in full above.

Can’t Keep Up With Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s Divorce? Here Are All the Details

By | April 13, 2021

Keeping up with the Kardashians’ antics is tough, but keeping up with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s divorce timeline may be even more difficult. On Feb. 19, multiple sources confirmed the couple’s divorce following months of breakup rumors, and no, we’re not over it. After four kids, seven years of marriage, and nearly two decades of friendship, it seemed like Kim and Kanye were in it for the long haul . . . that is, until the latter half of 2020, when rumors of marital troubles started swirling. There’s a good chance the divorce will be featured on the final season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, but if you can’t wait until then, here’s everything that has gone down so far.

  1. Divorce rumors start circulating. On Jan. 5, multiple sources for Page Six reportedly claimed “divorce is imminent” for Kim and Kanye. “Kim got Kanye to go up there [Wyoming] so they could live separate lives and quietly get things sorted out to separate and divorce. She’s done,” one insider said. That same day, Kim posted a picture without her wedding ring on Instagram, but she ended up deleting the post three days later.
  2. More details emerge about the rumored split. Soon after news of the impending divorce broke, Us Weekly shared the reported reason for Kim and Kanye’s split. “They had a big fight in early December,” a source claimed. “Kanye blew up at Kim and she was really upset. Things between them don’t seem to have healed since that.” Another source for Us Weekly claimed the two weren’t on the same page about the future. As the insider explained, “Kanye is jealous of the amount of time Kim has dedicated to prison reform and the kids. Kanye wanted the family to move to Wyoming full-time. It’s where he sees this direction of his life going. Kim just doesn’t see their lives full-time in Wyoming.”
  3. Sources claim the divorce will be amicable. On Jan. 14, E! News reported that there’s “no bad blood” between Kim and Kanye and that their relationship is “cordial.” An insider reportedly added, “Kim wants to feel at peace going into this new chapter of her life and is focused on herself and her children.”
  4. Sources claim Kim and Kanye quit marriage counseling. Though the couple were reportedly seeking help from a marriage counselor, a source for People claimed Kim and Kanye decided to quit marriage counseling on Jan. 18. “He is talking to divorce lawyers this week,” the insider claimed in reference to Kanye.
  5. Kanye is spotted for the first time in months. On Jan. 24, Kanye was seen deboarding a plane in LA with his entourage, which was the first time he’d been spotted in public since November 2020.
  6. Financial details emerge. According to a source for Us Weekly, Kim had reportedly begun “talks” with her divorce lawyer back in July 2020 to determine an “exit strategy” from her marriage. “Kim has had all of her and Kanye’s financials and properties ready to be split, [and] it’s a very fair deal for everyone,” the source claimed on Jan. 27. “Kim has all of her assets and financials ready for when she decides to file officially.”
  7. Kim goes on a girls’ trip to Turks and Caicos. On Jan. 30, Kim was spotted on a girls’ trip in Turks and Caicos, which included Kim’s daughters, North and Chicago, as well as her sisters Kourtney, Khloé, and Kylie.
  8. Kim wears Yeezys in an Instagram post. While on vacation, Kim seemingly showed support for Kanye when she posted an Instagram on Jan. 31, which showed her posing in a bikini and a pair of Yeezy Foam Runners.
  9. Kim seemingly takes over Kanye’s closet. Kim showed off her new Skims showroom on her Instagram Stories on Feb. 2, and fans couldn’t help but notice that the room looked a lot like Kanye’s former Yeezy showroom, which was previously featured on David Letterman‘s Netflix series.
  10. Kanye reportedly moves out. On Feb. 3, sources for Page Six reportedly claimed that Kanye had moved 500 pairs of shoes (among other belongings) out of the Calabasas mansion he shared with Kim.
  11. Kim and Kanye reportedly spend Valentine’s Day apart. Unsurprisingly, People reported that Kim and Kanye wouldn’t be celebrating Feb. 14 together. “She has a Valentine’s Day celebration planned with her kids and family,” an insider claimed. “She likes to make it special for the kids. She doesn’t have any contact with Kanye. It’s obvious that she is just focused on the future.”
  12. Kanye is seen wearing his wedding ring. While out and about in LA on Feb. 17, Kanye was photographed wearing a wedding band, though Kim had previously been spotted on multiple occasions without her own ring. That same day, a source for People claimed Kanye isn’t coping well with the split. “Kanye is not doing well,” the insider claimed. “He is anxious and very sad. He knows that the marriage is over, and there’s nothing that can be done right now. He also knows what he is losing in Kim.”
  13. Kim files for divorce from Kanye. After much speculation, Kim finally filed for divorce from Kanye on Feb. 19, according to court documents obtained by TMZ. Page Six also confirmed the split, reporting that Kim’s divorce lawyer, Laura Wasser, filed the papers the same day the news broke. According to sources, Kim requested joint legal and physical custody of their four children. That same day, a source for Entertainment Tonight claimed the divorce had been a long time coming. As the insider explained, “Kim filing for divorce from Kanye is just a formal part of the process. The couple has been done for a while and have been amicable for a while. At the end of the day, Kanye and Kim love each other immensely, but knew it was time to call it quits. Their children are their number one priority and no matter what will maintain a positive relationship for them.”
  14. Kim maybe sends a message through her Instagram Stories. On Feb. 22, Kim posted an IG Story featuring the song “Drivers License” by Olivia Rodrigo, and fans thought she might be sending a message about how she’s coping through the breakup ballad.
  15. Kim is spotted out with friends. According to photos obtained by Us Weekly, Kim stepped out with friends on Feb. 23 for a night on the town.
  16. Sources claim Kim is concerned for Kanye. A source for Entertainment Tonight reportedly claimed on March 2 that Kim is concerned for her ex’s well-being amid the divorce. “The divorce has been difficult for him, but knowing that he has access to his little ones and has split custody is making the transition easier,” the source said. The insider also noted that the whole thing was a relief for Kim, adding, “She is happy to see that chapter close. She knows that it is what is healthiest for her and her family and she is ready to put this hardship behind her both publicly and personally.”
  17. Sources claim Kim is keeping the house. According to a source for Us Weekly, Kim will get her and Kanye’s Calabasas mansion in the divorce. “She has made her life there and it’s her kids’ main home,” the source claimed on March 3. “There was never a question – Kim was going to keep the home.”
  18. Like Kim, Kanye requests joint custody of their kids. According to court documents obtained by E! News in April, Kanye also agrees with Kim that neither party should pay spousal support.

Why That Misogynistic Ginny & Georgia Remark Is More Problematic Than You Might Think

By | March 11, 2021

Since its Feb. 24 release, Netflix’s new series Ginny & Georgia has faced severe criticism for making an offhand, outdated, and sexist remark at the expense of Taylor Swift’s personal life. In the season finale, the titular mother-daughter duo engages in a heated argument about their respective complicated love lives. Feeling inspected and blind-sided by her mother’s knowledge of her covert love affair, Ginny resorts to a deeply flawed, uncalled-for quip, sniping, “What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift?”

Naturally, Swift’s fans caught wind of the jab and subsequently expressed their disapproval by getting “Respect Taylor Swift” trended on worldwide Twitter. On March 1, Taylor herself weighed in on the matter by sending out a succinct tweet, calling out Netflix for its complicity in the debacle.

This isn’t the first time such an incendiary comment has made into a Netflix show. In a 2017 episode titled “#GetMoney,” a character in Degrassi: Next Class also echoed a similar sentiment, saying, “Taylor Swift made an entire career off of her exes.” In her tweet, Taylor pointed out that she was especially disheartened as Netflix exclusively streamed the singer-songwriter’s documentary, Miss Americana, last year that expansively details the toll toxic media coverage took on Swift’s personal life and mental health. (Netflix is also home to the recorded version of Swift’s Reputation Stadium Tour.)

Criticism isn’t limited to Netflix as an organization; some fans deluged actor Antonia Gentry’s social handles with hateful messages and disturbing racial slurs. The show is Gentry’s first major acting credit; there’s no reason why she should be targeted or singled out when the creators of the show and Netflix fully had the reins. On March 5, Gentry posted a lengthy note on her Instagram expressing her gratitude for fans’ love and support through it all. Noting that while Ginny Miller is a fictional character, “she shows us our biases, prejudices, and injustices . . . She makes mistakes – morally, mentally, physically, emotionally – and not just within herself, but within the broken world she lives in.”

To anyone wondering why one “flippant” remark is gaining massive attention – there is more to this than meets the eye. The fact that there are two women writers behind the show is bewildering to me; and also proof positive that none of us – not even women – are immune to the internalized misogyny that is ingrained into us ever since our childhood. It runs deep.

None of us – not even women – are immune to the internalized misogyny that is ingrained into us ever since our childhood. It runs deep.

Swift has been subjected to this type of “subtle” sexism for years. The mere fact that she chooses to write about her relationships in her songs is deemed strategic by some, to put it mildly. Not long into her professional life, Swift’s dating life was unduly speculated upon, picked apart, and ridiculed in the public eye, so much so that her artistry was reduced to nothing more than fodder for hot gossip about who the subject of the song may be. This, in large measure, fed into the inspiration behind 2017’s Reputation – a much-needed record in which she attempts to regain control of her life’s narrative. Fast forward to 2021, the bigotry rears its ugly head yet again. So yes, I can imagine why it struck a nerve.

While male writers have been making music about their love lives since the beginning of time, not once in my 25 years of existence have they ever been put through hell and dragged through the mud the same way a woman is. As a matter of fact, they are revered and put on the pedestal for their transparency and vulnerability. Women are slandered and shamed for doing something that men are celebrated for – the very epitome of double standards. It seems to me that the amount of persecution and abuse hurled your way glaringly – and quite frankly, conveniently – boils down to whether you are a woman or a man in this world. Alexa, play “The Man” by Taylor Swift.

I’ve noticed several people say that “this is not a proportional response to a joke.” If this was a response to an isolated remark, I might agree – but it’s not. This rebellion is an amalgamation of pent-up frustration to all the misogynistic, malignant comments and jokes people have directed at Swift – and women, in general – for years on end. We’re not losing our collective temper over a minuscule, seemingly insignificant reference for no apparent reason; we recognize the fluorescent fact that Swift has been on the receiving end of this treatment for what is now half her life.

Swift isn’t the only mainstream celebrity, let alone the only woman, who has had to go through this horrifying cycle. One need not look further than Britney Spears and Meghan Markle to see paparazzi and tabloids ripping apart successful, hard-working women.

These “jokes” were not funny a decade ago, they are definitely not funny now. Including this type of biased dialogue in a series immortalizes a narrative that millions of viewers will be introduced and reintroduced to for years to come. The “take a joke” mentality simply minimizes the irrevocable damage the sexist attitude is causing. It’s not even the misogyny that scares me, it’s the denial of it. Making a mistake is human. Inserting that unwarranted remark and refusing to own up to your part while burying your head in the sand – that I take issue with.

We may have biases and prejudices against women without realizing they exist. You can “know better” and still, your subconscious might take a while to catch up to your instincts. You can be a fierce feminist, and yet have bigotry and misogyny coursing through your veins unbeknownst to you. As sad as it is, these two aren’t mutually exclusive. It takes action and education to combat the poisonous ideology that’s been programmed and baked into our brains without our consent or knowledge. It cannot be dealt in one fell swoop at the wave of a magic wand.

It’s high time we took a long hard look at ourselves and discard the beliefs that don’t dovetail with our feminist ideals. In the wise words of Taylor Swift, “Toss it out, reject it, and resist it.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Look Joyful in Family Photo Released After Oprah Interview

By | March 8, 2021

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey on March 7 included a number of jaw-dropping revelations, many heartbreaking and others exciting. As part of the more positive news, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their coming second child is a baby girl, due sometime this summer. “It’s amazing,” Harry said with joy.

Coincidentally, the following day marked International Women’s Day, and Harry and Meghan’s photographer Misan Harriman celebrated the occasion and the exciting announcement by sharing a new photo from the couple’s pregnancy-reveal shoot. In the picture, we see Meghan wearing a tropical print dress and holding 1-year-old Archie, with Harry hugging them both from behind. “What wonderful news to celebrate on International Women’s Day!” Misan captioned the photo on social media. “Congratulations my friends, and welcome to the #girldad club H.”

Meghan and Harry told the public they were expecting their second child on Feb. 14. As Meghan told Oprah in their interview, she’s experienced devastating losses recently, including a pregnancy loss last year. She still remains hopeful. “I grieve a lot. I mean, I’ve lost my father. I lost a baby. I nearly lost my name. I mean, there’s the loss of identity. But I’m still standing, and my hope for people in the takeaway from this is to know that there’s another side,” Meghan said. “To know that life is worth living.”

How Bradley Constant Went From Working at a Grocery Store to Playing Dwayne Johnson

By | February 18, 2021

Bradley Constant, 22, had just finished a shift at a grocery store when he found out that he would soon be playing an integral part in the telling of Dwayne Johnson’s life story. “I came home and I was playing X-Box,” Constant told me. “I got a call from my rep who said, ‘Hi, am I speaking to the one who is starring as Dwayne Johnson at 15 years old in the new show Young Rock?'”

Constant stars as a teenage Johnson in the NBC series Young Rock, an autobiographical sitcom about the 48-year-old actor’s formative years. Not only does the project mark Constant’s first major television role, but in a sense, it’s also a full-circle moment for him, having grown up watching Johnson as a wrestler on WWE. “It was just so exciting,” Constant recalled. “I closed my eyes and just did not know what to say. Then I FaceTimed my grandparents and they were crying and my brothers – that was the most amazing situation because my family, my grandparents, and my brothers had been with me since I decided to pursue something like this 10 years ago.”

Though Constant admits that he was only four or five years old when he used to watch wrestling with his dad in the living room, he remembers being obsessed with The Rock and his bravado. “He’s just the coolest dude on TV,” Constant said, referring to Johnson. “The first movie I saw him in was Walking Tall and I’ve followed all his movies ever since. I love it all.” Given how big of a fan Constant is of Johnson’s, it was only natural for him to be nervous to work alongside the actor, however, the nerves immediately faded away once they began talking. “He never placed any crazy expectations on me. He really just kind of tempered my nervousness,” Constant explained. “He’s just so genuine and so down-to-earth. He talks to you person to person, like anyone . . . He really just reminded me to be myself and have fun. I think that’s one of the best things he told me.”

“A huge part of this is not judging people, not judging a book by its cover.”

Young Rock focus on three defining chapters in Johnson’s life: when he was 10 years old living in Hawaii, when he was 15 years old after multiple arrests, and when he was 18 years old trying to get his life back on track while attending the University of Miami. When I asked Constant what part of the show’s narrative stood out to him the most, his answer was simple: “the aspect of family.” “It’s very present in every timeline, every episode,” Constant added. “[Johnson’s] talked about buying the car and all that. That’s really funny, but there are these really beautiful moments between him and his mom, the dynamic of relationship he had with his dad . . . It’s just such an awesome contrast. Tons of funny stuff, but also right after that, a very relatable truth of life. It’s not all glamorous and a shiny, glossy reflection on a superstar’s life. It’s a real guy with an awesome, inspiring story with incredible characters and real people.”

As for his favorite scene, Constant excitedly noted a scene from the second episode, where his crush Karen comes into the pizza shop he works at. Without divulging too many details, Constant added, “I’m nervous, I’m freaking out with my buddy Gabe. We’re like, ‘What do we do? What do we do? We got to impress the girls. Look cool.’ So in the most awkward terrible way, we try to look cool as she walks into the pizza shop. I walk over with confidence and I do an amazing impression to impress her and it works out and I get her number. It’s one of my favorite scenes to shoot. I wish I could have shot it 100 times more.”

Even though Young Rock centers on Johnson’s life, Constant hopes that people are able to see parts of themselves in all the different versions of Johnson. “A huge part of this is not judging people, not judging a book by its cover,” he explained. “There are layers to people, there’s a complex reality behind what you see. You could be seen as a punk kid, but he’s really a good kid dealing with tough issues at home and he loves his mamma. You know? I really want people to take away that real aspect in the show . . . No matter what you’re going through, what you’ve been through, you can have positive outcomes.”

Looking towards the future, Constant doesn’t have any crazy expectations, he just hopes Young Rock gets picked up for a second season. However, being in a Stars Wars film is on his bucket list, so I’ll just go ahead and put that out into the universe for him.

Watch Bradley Constant on Young Rock on NBC every Tuesday.
